The surviving Earth-origin humans become a counterpoint to Cato, showing how the same origin can produce liberation, apathy, or fanatic attachment to the System.

The Earth Survivors Different Responses Humans who enter the System do not respond uniformly. Some resist, some adapt, and some treat the System as an ideal game. A New Human Elite Morvan, Kiersten, Justin, Lorraine, and others rise quickly because human augmentation and cultural familiarity give them unusual advantages. Their success destabilizes the System’s existing social hierarchy. A Moral Contrast Their choices test Cato’s belief that Earth’s people can be saved. Some support him, some hesitate, and others become active enemies.
Kiersten’s DoubtKiersten’s Doubt from "Systema Delenda Est". Kiersten’s Doubt The Dream of the System Kiersten has enjoyed the System more than Cato expects.
Kiersten’s Doubt The Dream of the System Kiersten has enjoyed the System more than Cato expects. Its power, combat, and endless content give her a sense of vitality. Suspicion Returns After reaching Alum, she notices that her desires may be shaped by the System’s cornerstone structure. Memories of cat cafés, movies, books, and ordinary life become evidence that something has been taken from her. A Separate Choice She leaves Morvan and seeks Cato, not because she trusts him, but because she wants a reality whose authenticity she can investigate for herself.
Morvan’s DefianceMorvan’s Defiance from "Systema Delenda Est". Morvan’s Defiance Refusal of Cato Morvan treats the System as a legitimate home and Cato as a meddling destroyer.
Morvan’s Defiance Refusal of Cato Morvan treats the System as a legitimate home and Cato as a meddling destroyer. He believes Cato’s campaign is an attempt to impose another reality upon people who did not ask for it. Advice to the Gods Morvan recommends destroying worlds rather than allowing Cato to take them. His strategic insight gives the System a way to weaponize Cato’s concern for civilians. Final Erasure He remains committed to the System even as Cato’s stellar weapon attacks the Core. Misse removes him from existence when he cannot provide useful information, ending his defiance without changing his convictions.
Lorraine’s ConversionLorraine’s Conversion from "Systema Delenda Est". Lorraine’s Conversion A Human Who Still Enjoys the Game Lorraine rises through the System because combat genuinely satisfies her.
Lorraine’s Conversion A Human Who Still Enjoys the Game Lorraine rises through the System because combat genuinely satisfies her. She is not motivated by Cato’s original grief or by a desire to return to Earth. Trust Through Food Raine and Leese reach her through shared human food, especially the remembered comfort of pasta and ice cream. The offer becomes personal rather than ideological. Voluntary Exfiltration Lorraine accepts Cato’s reality after learning that it is not a mass consciousness or forced Elysium. She leaves the System and joins the long expedition toward Sydea.

The Human Divide Shared Origin Cato’s relatives and fellow Earth-origin humans understand his language, history, and vulnerabilities better than the System’s native species. This makes them uniquely dangerous opponents. Opposed Futures Cato imagines civilization, choice, and postbiological freedom. Morvan and many other humans prefer the System’s immediate rewards and structured violence. The Unresolved Loss Cato cannot force them to accept his reality without becoming the kind of authority he opposes. Their conflict remains personal even when it becomes cosmological.
